Welcome to the Osher Blog from UCLA Extension

Welcome to the Osher Blog, a new blog dedicated to life and lifelong learning for active and intellectually curious adults. My name is Maria Theresa Orefice and I am the program manager for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCLA Extension. In my role as manager, I regularly come in contact with fascinating Osher students, talented instructors, and experts in many interesting areas. I hope to share some of my experiences and meetings with you, pass on up-to-the-minute and relevant information, and introduce you to captivating and sometimes unusual people.

So, what is a blog? Blogs are different from websites or traditional forms of media in that they provide a forum for two-way communication in real time. Instead of just posting articles on a website which is static, a blog is an opportunity to lend your voice to the conversation by adding your comments in a more fluid and rapid environment. I really want to hear what you have to say and your particular point-of-view.

Many Osher members have joined because they are looking for a community of like-minded adults. I hope to use this blog as a place where members of our Osher community can come together to discuss a variety of topics, state their views, make stronger connections to others. In addition it will offer news on activities of interest taking place on the UCLA campus – many of them free or at low cost -- and around the area.

Our first artist-in-residence, Beverly Olevin, will add postings to the blog. Many of you are familiar with Beverly from her “Plays the Thing” courses and many salons. Think of the blog as a salon in cyber space where you can participate from the comfort of your home.

As with all salons, a certain level of decorum is expected. When someone hosts a salon in his or her home, they set the tone of the gathering. Most everyone is gracious, kind and nice. However, if a guest misbehaves, they will get a warning. If they continue to be rude, they will be shown the door, and they won’t be invited back. Here at the Osher blog, we host a moderated comment board. We welcome your comments, but we ask that you offer polite and constructive comments—no rants allowed. We are here to share in the celebration of lifelong learning and make stronger connections with one another. Please communicate with others at our blog with that spirit in mind and the way you would like to be talked to.

So, be the first on your block to blog! Hope to see you soon and hear your “voice” on the new Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCLA Extension blog.
